Animated Pencil

T. S. Abe’s clean lines; brave, intentional use of negative space; and movement really inspired my interpretation of my audio recording in Project 1.1. Initially I was worried that a quiet recording would make the assignment difficult, but looking at these equally quiet and calm gifs by Abe made me realise that there is value to depicting the concept of “less”. I am also incredibly impressed by the work that undeniably goes into making hand-drawn pencil gifs.

Hand drawn animation is the earliest form of animation. Old mickey mouse cartoons are done in amazing watercolor, and I am constantly impressed by them. These GIFs are a cool development of that idea because they acknowledge that they are self reflexive. There is no hiding the medium of pencil, but it becomes the central point.
