Over break, I watched the film ‘The Irishman’ on Netflix. It was about the life of a famous mob hitman Frank Sheeran (played by Robert De Niro), his mentor and leader of the Bufalino mob family Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci), and their involvement in the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino). Both De Niro and Pesci portray their characters over a 50 year time span, but never wore facial gear/prosthetics to change the way they looked. It was all stunningly done using ILM de-aging software and full CG makeovers to create younger versions of the actors. I was shocked to learn that it was all done digitally – the transitions were seamless.
